Sam Finds the Perfect Shirt
Lily looked at Sam the Zebra’s flat body. “Oh dear,” she said. “We can’t leave him that way.”
“No, certainly not,” said Uncle Dave. “A good-looking fellow like that needs to stand on his own four feet.”
So Lily took her stuffing tool and the bag of poly-fil® stuffing Uncle Dave had brought and stuffed her zebra.
“Now I feel good!” said Sam, and he threw out his chest and gave Lily and her Uncle Dave a big grin.
“Can you imagine a zebra with a sense of style?” asked Uncle Dave.

“Huh!” said Lily. “Why would a zebra care about his clothes?”

“Because he needs something to coordinate with his stripes.”

“Oh pooh!” said Lily. “You’re just being silly.”

    And, of course, he was.
But the more Lily thought about Sam the Zebra with clothes, the more she smiled. The more she smiled, the more she wanted to laugh... and the more she tried to keep from laughing... the harder it was... so she gave up.
“Imagine I am a fashion photographer on the plains of Africa, with all my equipment.”
She clutched her camera, a present from Uncle Dave.
“I am looking for the perfect outfit for the season, and...” said Sam, “imagine what a mess we’d be in if I couldn’t find just the right combination for the shoot. I would have to find something very cool. I would say... how about this plaid number?”
“And we would say... that is not cool at all,” said the others.
“So, then I would choose this knit shirt with a great little logo on the pocket.”

“And we would say... are you planning on playing golf?”
“So, then I would put on my tank top with the gold chain.”

“And we would groan and roll in the grass.”
“So, then I would rent a tuxedo— something flashy for the occasion.”

“And we would ask... where is the wedding?”
“So, I would become very discouraged and pout.”

“And we would offer to solve your little problem.”

    “And I would ask... how?”
“We would whisk out this little Hawaiian number.”

“And I would say... when pigs fly”.
“And then we would give up.”

“But,” said Lily, “I would find the perfect thing... stylish and subtle. You would all applaud my taste and my editor would stop the presses.”

“What would it be?” they all demanded.
“It would be a simple, elegant, striped shirt.”

“A perfect match!” declared the others.
"Then we would all pose together," said the animals.
"And I would snap, snap, snap, and send all the pictures back to New York City so they would be published in a very high fashion magazine," replied Lily.
